Learning Backgammon 101

Learning backgammon rules need not be a daunting task. In fact, it can be simple, exciting, and can provide opportunities for making money and meeting new acquaintances. Here you will learn the rules of backgammon so that you can start indulging in this fun game.

When learning backgammon, the first thing that you need to be aware of is the layout of the board. Each side has 15 checkers positioned on triangular points on the board. It is divided into two sections by a bar placed at the center of the board. At the start of the game, each player will toss a dice and the number that will appear on the face of the dice represents the number of moves they can make using one or two of their checkers.

In backgammon, your objective is to navigate your checkers towards your home board and then remove them before your opponent can bear their own pieces. The first player to do so wins the game.

The color of your pieces determines the direction of your movement. For instance, if you are using the white checkers, your movement is counter-clockwise, that is from the bottom left portion of the board going to the top left. If you have the black checkers, your movement is the opposite meaning you move from the top left portion of the board going to the bottom left. You have the option to move one or two checkers depending on the total pip count displayed on the face of the dice.

In the game of backgammon, you move your checkers to any vacant point. Likewise, you can choose to position your checkers on a point occupied by your own checker or on a point with one of the checkers of your opponent. This move is called a hit. The checker is then placed on the bar and brought back into action by tossing a dice. This must be done prior to your opponent's moving of their other checkers to their home board. Since your aim is to bear off all your checkers in the earliest possible time, it is recommended to hit as many checkers as possible.
